There are many health and fitness benefits of sailing that really help me with my overall fitness for Footy. Not only is sailing is a great way to get active while having fun with mates on the water, it is also great for your aerobic fitness, cardiovascular fitness, anaerobic capacity and muscular strength. I also find it's great for muscle endurance, flexibility and agility!
Building muscle strength and endurance are some of the key outcomes of sailing that are really beneficial for my football performance. There are a number of repetitive movements in sailing which help you build the muscular endurance and strength needed to see you through an 80 minute game.
Flexibility and agility are also part of the health benefits of sailing.Flexibility exercises are really important to me as a footballer as they increase the range of movement of the joints and therefore prevent injury during training and competition by ensuring that the muscle does not become too stretched, causing it to tear. Poor flexibility also hinders speed which I really need as a winger. If you have poor flexibility and endurance then your muscles have to work harder to overcome resistance.

My most action packed moment:
My New Years trip to Nelson's Bay was my most action packed moment. It was wild and fun. It was that action packed I can't even remember most of it!
Go outdoors as much as possible when getting active. Encourage your mates or form a 'get active' group to exercise together. It will help you keep motivated and it's a good way to catch up with friends while getting fit at the same time
Set yourself goals so that you can monitor your progress. You need to keep challenging yourself in order to get the best results. If you find it hard to do this yourself it's worthwhile looking into getting a Personal Trainer
It's easier to exercise if you have fun while you're doing it. A good tip for blokes is to choose a place where all the good sorts exercise and that will encourage you! It's also handy if you have a dog that you can take with you. They give you a good run around...and they're a great conversation starter with the ladies too!

My most action packed moment:
My most action packed moment would have to be last year's Mad Monday where I had to wear a wedding dress and run down the middle strip of the Gold Coast. Crazy!
Confidence plays a significant part in preparing you for a Grand Final. You have to trust that you have done all the hard work during the season to make it to the Grand Final and then carry that assurance into the game. Players often say that they have a feeling before going into the match whether it's going to go their way or not and you just have to believe and visualise that it will. Running through the game in your head and visualising what you want to achieve can really help your preparation.
Sometimes the high of reaching a Grand Final can overshadow the game itself. There is a lot of media attention during the week leading into the Grand Final and it can destabilise your preparation if you let it. You have to remain focused and motivated towards winning the Premiership, which is the greatest pinnacle in rugby league.
You have to stick to the game plan that got you to the Grand Final in the first place. The structures, plans and systems that work for you during the year are the reason why you've made it to the big day. Some rugby league analysts criticise our team for having a relatively small pack compared to other NRL sides but there is a lot of speed in our pack so our trademark play is all about displaying agility, mobility, speed and skill which can run the bigger packs into the ground.
